Just 2 km south of the DMZ’s Southern Limit Line lies Camp Greaves in Paju City, Gyeonggi Province. This former U.S. military base, where American troops were stationed for over 50 years after the Korean War, has a remarkable story to tell.
Once off-limits to civilians, the base was vacated in 2004 when the last U.S. forces withdrew. In 2013, Gyeonggi Province and Gyeonggi Tourism Organization opened the site to the public, preserving its original buildings. Today, it operates as the only cultural and arts experience facility with accommodations inside the Civilian Control Zone.
Visitors can explore the past through programs like <VIEW-tiful Greaves>, a tour of the base’s original facilities such as the bowling alley, BEQ (Bachelor Enlisted Quarters), Quonset huts, and ammunition depots once used by the U.S. military. Other engaging activities include <DMZ Golden Bell Challenge>, a history quiz show themed around Korea’s modern history and peace reunification, and <DMZ Eco-Culture Class>, where you can learn about endangered species in the region.
Camp Greaves is more than a historic site. It’s a space where exhibitions, performances, and cultural programs bring history and art together.
As you walk through the expansive outdoor grounds, galleries, and exhibition halls, you’ll experience the powerful encounter of past traces with contemporary creativity. 🌿🎨
Many of the camp’s old buildings and facilities remain intact, telling vivid stories of Korea’s modern history. Because of its unique atmosphere,
the site has also become a popular filming location. The hit K-drama <Descendants of the Sun>, as well as several music videos and films, were shot here.
Camp Greaves is a rare place where the scars of war coexist with art. Come and immerse yourself in history, peace, and creativity for an unforgettable experience. ✨
