Not only will new releases be announced by famous game companies – both from Korean and abroad – but there will also be opportunities to experience these releases in advance!
The 2023 PlayX4, the largest game show of its kind in the Korean capital region, is being hosted by Gyeonggi Province. Organized by the Gyeonggi Content Agency and KINTEX, it will be held from May 11 to 14 at KINTEX in Gyeonggi Province’s Goyang City. This year's PlayX4 is taking place under the theme "Enjoy Game! Make Chance!" and aims to create "enjoyment opportunities" for families, lovers, and friends, "growth opportunities" for indie and new game companies, and "exchange opportunities" for diverse game cultures.
As the PlayX4 has been promoting healthy game culture among gamers and supporting small and medium-sized game companies, this year's event will also offer special experiences and opportunities to both game companies and visitors.
PlayX4 will consist of export consultations (May 11-12, Hall 6) and exhibitions (May 11-14, Halls 7-8). In addition, the "Gyeonggi Esports Festival," a multifaceted event featuring a campus tournament of 58 universities, a competition for the disabled, and an invitational internet celebrity (influencer) event, will be held concurrently with PlayX4 this year, providing even more excitement. As esports have been officially designated as an event at the Hangzhou Asian Games in September, a national representative competition will also take place at this festival.
The export consultations will be held both online and offline, providing domestic developers participating offline with opportunities to meet with domestic and foreign distributors (buyers) through 1:1 business matching, and providing online participants with 24-hour interpretation services so as to accommodate the working hours of overseas game distributors in the Americas and Europe.
Of particular note, interest in this year's export consultations is hotter than ever with 160 companies, including famous domestic and foreign game distributors (buyers), already confirmed to participate offline. Indie game developers in Korea are particularly interested in meeting with Nicalis, a specialized indie game distributor in the United States, Tilting Point, a top-10 game distributor in the United States, Gameforge, a German online game specialist distributor, ESI Games, a Chinese company that is expanding its investment in Korean games, Garena, the largest distributor in Southeast Asia, and VTV Live, a Vietnamese state-owned broadcasting and esports company.
In addition, a special exhibition will take place to support diversification and overseas market expansion in connection with intellectual property rights (IP). CJ ENM, a major original content and mass media company in Korea, is preparing a special exhibition, while Xbox (Microsoft XBOX) and Bilibili, a Chinese cultural community video platform, are discussing a special exhibition for console linkage. In addition, overseas expansion seminars by representatives of game operation companies active overseas will be held, providing useful information on market entry strategies and local trends in emerging markets such as the Philippines, Thailand, and Brazil.
As the exhibition will be held at a time when COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, expectations are higher than ever. New works in various game genres, including console games, arcade, indie, and PC/mobile, will be introduced, and a variety of events that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, such as festival competitions, retro markets, and game culture talks, will also be held. Gyeonggi Province officials say that, through this event, the province will create opportunities for meetings between game developers and gamers that were stifled during the pandemic, thereby enabling the revitalization of healthy game culture.
