Let us introduce Uiwang-si and its railroad special zone project.
Uiwang-si is the city located in the south-central part of Gyeonggi province.
It is a small city made up of six administrative districts
with its population of 160,000.
Although the development restriction area occupies 88.9% of the total area of the city,
it is famous with excellent natural environment, Cheonggyesan Mountain, Baekun Lake, Railway Museum,
and the popular tourist destination such as Uiwang Lake Park.
As the first railroad special zone, the railroad industry is famous.

This is an area designated and announced for the specialized development of the region.
As Uiwang City has been designated as the only railroad special zone in Korea,
it’s been transforming into a railroad-centric specialized area.
The railroad special zone project is an institutional supporting project such as regulatory exceptions
in order to discover and develop differentiated specialized projects.
The working expense of KRW 229.6 billion is being invested to Bugok-dong, Uiwang-si.
Starting with the opening of the Gyeongbu Line in 1905, the Uiwangsibugok area
has now had over 100 years of railway history.
With the concentrated railroad and logistics-related industries, research, and cultural facilities,
it was designated as the only railroad special zone in Korea in the year of 2013.

Bugok-dong, Uiwang-si is a key point of the railroad industry where the tradition of Korean railways containing
Korea Railroad Research Institute, Korea National University of Transportation, Korea Railroad Corporation, Human Resources Development Institute,railway museum, etc.
and the modernized high-tech railway city coexists.
The necessity of developing the industry in connection with the ecology and tourism industry has emerged in the Bugok area.
Although the wording of railroad special zone sounds as cold as you would remind of a machine,
many visits have been made to Uiwang-si thanks to the sunset of Wangsong Lake, where about 90 species of migratory birds visit,
and experiential family tourist destination in the metropolitan area that puts together Railway Museum and Bird Ecology Museum.
In addition, Uiwang Railway-related festivals are held every May
in the railroad museum and nature learning park, allowing many visitors
to enjoy various cultures and experiences on trains and railways.
It exhibits a history hall, sculptures, and a railroad park in order to promote the special zone.
A railway street is created in the section of Uiwang Station and Bugok Jungang-ro of the Railway Museum
and an experiential railway festival is held.
Railroad brand facilities such as railroad parks and railroad streets have been built in the special zone of Bugok-dong,
and it’s now been developed into the best railroad-specialized complex in connection with rail bikes.
With the designation of a special railroad zone in Uiwang, production inducement of KRW 1.134 trillion and
possible economic ripple effects such as job creation for 9,079 people are expected.

Uiwang-si has made various efforts for more than two years for the designation as a special railway zone,
including reducing the project area, adjusting the boundary between Suwon City and administrative districts, and negotiating with civil society
in line with the request for the changes by Central Urban Committee.
Uiwang-si plans to focus on four specialized projects, including the construction of Wangsong Lake Park,
construction of Uiwang High-tech Industrial Complex centered on railway R&D, the special zone revitalization support project,
and the railway brand reinforcement project.
Furthermore, we will establish the railway industry, an eco-friendly future high-value-added transportation suitable for low-carbon green growth,
as the basis for new growth engines to secure regional symbolism and brand as a railway mecca.
