If you're looking for a truly unique travel destination that blends history, nature, and even a little surprise in South Korea, look no further than Aegibong Peace Ecopark in Gimpo City, Gyeonggi Province.
This extraordinary site offers one of the closest views of North Korea from South Korea and it’s also home to the world’s only ‘North Korea-view Starbucks’, which has been generating a buzz across social media recently.
Aegibong Peace Ecopark sits near Jogang River, the only waterway in Korea jointly used by both South and North Korea. This makes it a place of deep symbolism, representing not only Korea’s divided past but also hope for peace and reunification.
Because the park is located within a civilian-controlled zone, all visitors must submit an entry form before admission. After that, you'll purchase a ticket and board a shuttle bus. Highly recommend taking it, since the park's facilities are not easily walkable from the ticketing center. (Don’t worry, the shuttle is included in the entrance fee!)
While military personnel will check everyone’s ID and ticket before passing the gate, the overall atmosphere remains calm and orderly. It is not intimidating at all!
After about a 5-minute shuttle ride, your first destination is the recently renovated exhibition hall. Inside, you’ll find detailed displays about the history of South and North Korea, as well as the unique ecological landscape of the Aegibong area. It’s both informative and thought-provoking. An ideal place for those wanting a meaningful experience.
On the way to the observatory, stroll through themed gardens, peaceful rest areas, and even an ecological trail with a mildly adventurous suspension bridge. The well-maintained park also features photo zones, perfect for capturing your visit.
The highlight of your visit awaits at the Aegibong Observatory, where on a clear day you can see actual North Korean villages across the river. Free telescopes are available for a closer look. It is an experience that leaves a lasting impression on many visitors.
And yes, this is where you’ll find the world’s only Starbucks overlooking North Korea. Perched right by the observatory, it offers an experience like no other. Sip your coffee while gazing at a country just across the river but worlds apart. It’s a surreal, reflective, and oddly peaceful moment.
If you're searching for a travel experience unlike any other, Aegibong Peace Ecopark in Gyeonggi Province is waiting. Come for the view, stay for the meaning.
