On the morning of September 30th, an extraordinary meeting took place at the
Yuyeotaek, a part of the Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, where King Jeongjo of the Joseon
Dynasty once conducted official business. This historic setting provided the backdrop for
a significant encounter between Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon and Utah
Governor Spencer James Cox, marking a new step in their cooperation.
As Governor Kim and his wife greeted Governor Cox and his delegation,
they were escorted into Yuyeotaek in a grand procession,
complete with guards dressed in traditional Korean attire.
Governor Kim introduced the location, explaining, "Built in the 18th century, Hwaseong Haenggung is a place where the latest technologies of the East and West came together. It is a symbol of innovation, progress, and a vision for a better tomorrow."
Governor Cox expressed his admiration, stating, “It’s an honor to be here. Entering this beautiful Hwaseong Haenggung, I truly felt like royalty.” The meeting culminated in the signing of an action plan between Gyeonggi Province and the State of Utah. The plan outlines specific areas of cooperation, including trade and economy, culture and sports, and education and human exchanges.
The action plan represents a further elevation of the sisterhood relationship between Gyeonggi Province and Utah, which began 41 years ago and has been strengthened through numerous agreements over the years. After the signing ceremony, the two governors and their respective delegations toured the Bongsudang, the site where King Jeongjo hosted a grand banquet in honor of his mother, Lady Hyegyeong. Governor Cox remarked on the deep history, saying,
“I know this is where King Jeongjo once welcomed his mother. I saw the inscription outside that says, ‘This is my new home.’ It feels like Gyeonggi Province has become Utah’s new home. I’m grateful to Governor Kim for this warm welcome.” Following the tour, the delegations continued their discussions over lunch at Dodamso. The governors explored ways to enhance collaboration in areas such as startups, education, and tourism. Both sides agreed to establish working-level communication channels to further develop the ideas discussed.
Governor Cox highlighted the importance of this partnership, saying, “I hope future generations will look back and remember that we chose to become stronger together and were humble enough to learn from one another. I am incredibly proud of our sisterhood relationship with Gyeonggi Province.”
The new action plan is expected to pave the way for greater cooperation in key areas such as biotechnology, IT, culture, sports, and education. With innovation as a driving force, both regions anticipate continued growth and development through this strengthened partnership.
This meeting at the historic Hwaseong Haenggung marks yet another milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Gyeonggi Province and Utah, symbolizing a bright future of mutual progress.
