Summer is all about water!
Jaein Waterfall in Yeoncheon County, Gyeonggi Province, is a perfect natural retreat combining valleys, swimming spots, and beautiful waterfalls. This destination is ideal for family outings or trips with friends, offering well-maintained walking paths and no parking fees.
Jaein Waterfall is surrounded by forest trails, making it a cool and pleasant place to walk, with a refreshing breeze keeping the heat at bay. Following the path, you’ll encounter the old legend associated with the waterfall.
Long ago, there was a skilled tightrope walker named Jaein. The local magistrate coveted Jaein's wife, and after killing Jaein, the wife bit the magistrate's nose and jumped to her death from the waterfall. The falling water is said to resemble her tears. Upon reaching the waterfall, a grand sight awaits—a waterfall 30 meters wide and 100 meters long. The emerald-colored water is so clear it seems like a natural habitat for fish. There’s even a cave behind the waterfall, adding a mystical ambiance. Enjoy the view from an observation deck or get up close from below, offering two different perspectives. The surrounding area features unique rock formations, showcasing the untouched beauty of nature. This natural splendor led to the designation of Hantan River as a UNESCO World Geopark in July 2020. Jaein Waterfall is also part of a "Carbon-Free Forest," providing visitors with shaded resting areas and contributing to climate change mitigation and carbon absorption.
During the summer rainy season, the deck paths might be closed, so it’s a good idea to check before visiting. There’s also a suspension bridge that offers a thrilling view of the waterfall. There are plenty of other attractions and activities nearby to fill your day. Visit Dongmakri Valley, Obongsa Temple, Seongryeong Fortress, and Tonghyeonri Dolmen for a complete experience.
Jaein Waterfall in Yeoncheon is highly recommended as a summer outing spot. Enjoy the natural beauty and historical tales for a memorable time!
