In Korea, June 6th is Memorial Day, a day to honor those who gave their lives for the defense of the nation. 🇰🇷 On this significant day, we would like to introduce a meaningful place to visit in Gyeonggi Province: the Icheon National Cemetery.
Icheon National Cemetery
Opened in April 2008, the Icheon National Cemetery is a national cemetery where those who contributed to the peace of Korea, including veterans of the Korean War and the Vietnam War, are laid to rest.
It is the third national cemetery established in Korea, following those in Yeongcheon and Imsil.
The cemetery stands as a symbol of the nation's remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifices and dedication of its patriots. It plays a crucial role in expressing respect and appreciation for those who served the country.
Unlike typical national cemeteries, the Icheon National Cemetery features an outdoor columbarium with murals depicting significant events in Korean history, such as the founding of Dangun Joseon, the liberation on August 15 in 1945, and the Korean War.
Additionally, the War Memorial Hall within the cemetery provides a comprehensive view of Korea's struggle for independence.
It is divided into sections: the War History Room, the Korean War Room, and the Overseas Dispatch Room, offering a glimpse into the various wars and conflicts Korea has experienced. Visiting such a historical site during Memorial Day and Memorial Month offers a unique opportunity to reflect on Korea's history and pay tribute to its heroes.
