Gyeonggi Province Safeguards Your Late Night Return Home
As the return to daily life progresses in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ‘commuting war’ has begun once again. Long queues of people waiting for buses and subways are a common sight and the crowded conditions are overwhelming.
Residents of Gyeonggi Province who commute to Seoul for work face even more difficulties as they rely on metropolitan buses for transportation. They often find themselves waiting in endless queues of passengers at major bus stops on the way home, and suffer severe fatigue on heavily congested highways when there is heavy traffic. Also, they are often rushed, fearing to miss the last bus home as midnight approaches; if they miss that last bus, they have to pay hefty taxi fares to return home.

Extension of major wide-area buses time to improve transportation in Gyeonggi-do
To address this issue, Gyeonggi Province will extend operating hours of major metropolitan bus lines running between Seoul and Gyeonggi Province up to 2 AM from August 1 so as to improve mobility for provincial residents who are struggling to return home late at night and suffering from the stress of missing the last bus home.
Metropolitan buses of Gyeonggi Province will see their operating hours extended from between midnight and 2 AM on nine major lines departing from Seoul. With the addition of 2 to 6 new buses on each line, bus intervals will also be addressed with running times of between 15 and 40 minutes.
The nine metropolitan bus lines that will see their hours extended are those running between major departure points in Seoul (including Gangnam, Gwanghwamun, Jamsil, and Sinchon) and large residential areas in Gyeonggi Province (including Seongnam-Pangyo, Ansan-Gojan, Uijeongbu-Millak, and Paju-Unjeong).

From August 1, Paju City’s bus no. 3100 (Gyoha-Hongik University Station) and Pocheon City’s bus no. 3100 (Daejin University-Yangjae Station) have begun operating with extended hours. Other lines operating with extended hours include bus no. G1300 (Yangju Deokjeong Station-Jamsil Station) and bus no. G6000 (Uijeongbu Singok-dong-Jamsil Station).
The policy for the extension of these late night bus lines was implemented in consideration of public bus commuting demands in Gyeonggi Province, areas of operation within Seoul, number of available buses, and late night demand. Based on the pilot operation of this initiative, the province plans to review the extension of operating hours for bus lines in other regions, comprehensively determining travel demand and resident satisfaction levels.
