Gyeonggi Province Launches ‘2022 Youth Transportation Expense Support Project’

There are times when even the expense of going out every month become burdensome. Food and housing costs account for a large portion of most budgets, with other sundry living expenses piling up throughout the month to the point that they can no longer be ignored.

Korea offers diverse support and benefits to vulnerable citizens who are facing difficulties maintaining their livelihoods. Gyeonggi Province itself has announced policies to relieve the financial burdens borne by provincial residents, and transportation expense support for financially vulnerable youths living in the province is one of these policies.

Since 2020, pursuant to the ‘Framework Ordinance on the Improvement of Public Transportation Use in Gyeonggi Province,’ the provincial government has been implementing a youth transportation expense support project, and it is now doing so for the first half of 2022.

Those between the ages of 13 and 23 (international age) qualify for this support, with the project covering relevant outlays for the first half of this year (January to June).

Those between the ages of 13 and 23 (international age) qualify for this support, with the project covering relevant outlays for the first half of this year (January to June). Due to the implementation of the ‘international age’ in the system in Korea, there may be some confusion regarding qualifying ages, so those interested should confirm their eligibility before applying. Applicants simply have to meet the age requirement (born between January 2, 1998, and June 30, 2009) when they use public transportation.

Now, for the most important part: the amount of support provided. This support will be capped at KRW 120,000 per year, which means that qualifying applicants can receive up to KRW 60,000 for first half of the year. The public transportation expenses will be reimbursed in the form of Gyeonggi Province local currency that will remain valid for five years from the date it is provided. Therefore, qualifying applicants need to have a public transportation card under their name and a local currency card under their own or a guardian’s name.

The program recognizes bus usage on Gyeonggi Bus lines, including local and intra-city buses, as well as transfers linked to Gyeonggi Bus lines, so be sure to apply if you are a youth living in Gyeonggi Province.

This year, the application process has been simplified so as to provide support to even more people. Those interested can apply via the Gyeonggi Province Youth Transportation Expense Support website (www.gbuspb.kr). The application process consists of membership registration,  public transportation card registration, local currency card registration, and then applying for support.
