Gyeonggi Ocean Series Episode2: Siheung to Become Korea's Leading Marine Leisure City

Now anyone can conveniently enjoy surfing in the city of South Korea! What else is there we can enjoy in Siheung?

Turtle Island

Siheung MTV Turtle Island is a turtle-shaped artificial island on Sihwa Lake, a large artificial body of water surrounded by the cities of Siheung, Ansan, and Hwaseong in Gyeonggi Province. Sihwa Lake was created in 1994 through the construction of the Sihwa seawall linking Siheung and Hwaseong.

The marine leisure complex adjacent to Sihwa Lake has an area of approximately 325,300m² and consists of Turtle Island as well as the amenities of the surrounding waterside park. Among these facilities, Wave Park, the world's largest artificial surfing site, opened on Turtle Island a year and a half after the ground-breaking ceremony held in May last year. Thanks to Wave Park, people can enjoy surfing in the Korean capital region, an activity that previously could only be pursued domestically in places like Jeju, Busan, and Yangyang.

Wave Park, created through the collaboration of Daewon Plus and Spain's Wave Park, was realized with 100% private investment and will be transferred to Siheung City after 20 years of operation. Artificial surfing, wave pools and other amenities are opening sequentially. Starting with the Wave Park, Daewon Plus Group plans to create a global attraction near Turtle Island by 2023 through the development of hotels, marinas, and a Ferris wheel.

There was a behind-the-scenes effort by Gyeonggi Province to complete the artificial surfing site early. The project was in danger of failing because, in the early stages, it did not align with a prevailing law on the development of sports facilities. To address this issue, Gyeonggi Province formed a task force team in conjunction with a joint public-private consultative body and engaged in consultations with the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, ultimately enabling the completion of the project. As a result of these efforts, Gyeonggi Province was recognized as an exemplary local government by the Korean Ministry of Public Administration and Security.

Combined with the adjacent Aquapetland and Marine Ecological Science Museum, Sihwa Lake is projected to become a mecca for Korea’s marine leisure industry as the country's surfing population soars with the adoption of surfing as an official event at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and 2024 Paris Olympics.
