Sales of Indoor Sports Facilities Dropped
Due to the continuation of the pandemic, the sports industry has been directly hit as it experiences challenges with regular operations due to repeated prohibitions of large gatherings and other such social distancing measures.According to one study, sales at indoor sports facilities fell 64.3% last year due to COVID-19. In particular, sales declined significantly at fitness centers, taekwondo centers, and swimming pools. The number of employees in the industry has also declined. Employment in the sports sector fell 8.8%, compared to the time prior to the pandemic.

Rejuvenating the Sports Industry with Job Creation and More
In order to overcome such circumstances, Gyeonggi Province is propelling ‘2021 Gyeonggi-do Sports New Deal Initiatives,’ which include creating 126 short-term jobs for workers in related field affected by the pandemic.The Sports New Deal Initiatives consist of three categories: a) creating three-month-long, short-term jobs for sports workers through a budget of KRW 960 million; b) providing quarantine goods through a budget of KRW 320 million; and c) allocating KRW 465 million for non-face-to-face sports contents. A total of KRW 1.745 billion has been earmarked for these initiatives. As a first step, Gyeonggi-do will hire short-term employees to support the administrative affairs of sports organizations in selected cities and counties.
Funding for Quarantine Goods and Non-contact Sports Contents
The government will also provide quarantine goods to help prevent COVID-19 while enabling sports activities. These goods include essential items such as masks, portable thermometers, hand sanitizers, and more for organizing sports competitions and events.Subject beneficiaries include athletic organizations like city and county sports associations. The government plans to provide at between KRW 9 to 11 million in each such case based on population.
Non-contact sports content projects will present opportunities for sports workers and various coaching platforms. The participants can produce various YouTube videos related to sports for submission to sports organizations in cities and counties with related expenses receiving coverage in proportion to the number of likes and views.
