If you are wondering where to go during Korea’s rainy season, here is a place that is both fun and educational. Located in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, Haewoojae is a museum where you can enjoy both indoor and outdoor experiences, no matter the weather.
Haewoojae is the world’s only toilet-shaped museum, and its name means "a house to relieve worries." This unique space was originally the home of the late Sim Jae-duck, former mayor of Suwon City, who built it to raise awareness about toilet culture.
Today, Haewoojae operates as a cultural complex with exhibitions, hands-on activities, and outdoor displays all themed around bathrooms and sanitation.
Visitors can explore how Korean toilets looked in the past, including simple pit toilets, roofless outdoor restrooms, and the royal portable toilet. These exhibits in the outdoor space give a glimpse into traditional hygiene practices.
Inside the main building, you will find a variety of exhibits about the history of toilets, the importance of hygiene, and how public restroom culture has evolved. These are explained through models, photos, and videos that are easy for children to understand.
One highlight for families is the second floor’s ‘Golden Poo Bank.’ This playful exhibition helps children learn about health and hygiene through fun activities like poop coin bank making, friendly character displays, and health check stations that are designed with young visitors in mind.
Haewoojae is a great destination for families looking to laugh, learn, and spend quality time together. It offers a rare opportunity to educate children about sanitation and environmental issues in a way that is memorable and light-hearted.
If you are planning a day trip near Seoul, Suwon’s Haewoojae Museum is an ideal choice for all ages.
