On the morning of March 14, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office welcomed a visit from Thailand's Minister of Labor, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, and his delegation, where a Record of Discussion (ROD) was signed, marking a positive meeting on labor cooperation between the two sides.

The relationship between the two sides has been becoming increasingly close since last year. Gyeonggi Province Governor Dong Yeon Kim met with Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, who was the Minister of Tourism and Sports at the time, during his visit to Bangkok in July 2023, to discuss mutual exchange measures. They reunited on this occasion with Ratchakitprakarn visiting in his capacity as the Minister of Labor.

Let’s look at what specific agreements were reached.

The main content of the ROD includes the Thai Ministry of Labor committing to build a close cooperative system between the two countries and work towards mutual interests, as well as to establish legal workforce management measures to prevent the illegal stay of Thai nationals in Korea.

Simultaneously, Gyeonggi Province has promised to actively support visa changes to expand employment for Thais within the province, among other efforts for efficient labor agreements between the two countries.

There are about 50,000 Thais living in Gyeonggi Province, accounting for 30% of the approximately 163,000 Thais living nationwide, with 11,000 of them being foreign workers.

In line with the spirit of the ROD, Gyeonggi Province has committed to pursuing policies that support living together with foreign residents. This includes providing level-based Korean language education and cultural diversity education for settlement support, medical support for foreign workers, and emergency support for living and medical expenses, among other life-assisting measures.
This effort can be seen as part of reciprocal cooperation between the two countries, especially at a time when the importance and scale of introducing foreign workers are expanding due to the decreasing population of working-age individuals, encompassing improvement of working conditions and protection of rights for foreigners.

As of 2023, the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Thailand, the bilateral trade volume was $14.9 billion, and the cumulative investment was $4.9 billion. With already several cooperation initiatives underway, Gyeonggi Province expects this meeting to expand opportunities for exchange and cooperation in various fields with Thailand!
