On March 7, 2024, a meeting took place at Dodamso (Gyeonggi gubernatorial residence) between the Governor of Gyeonggi Province and the Governor of the State of Michigan.
Gyeonggi Province Governor Dong Yeon Kim met with Michigan State Governor Gretchen Whitmer (US) to discuss multifaceted cooperation plans in areas such as advanced mobility, renewable energy, the Fourth Industrial Revolution centers, and youth exchanges between Gyeonggi and Michigan.
Let's delve into the discussions discussed during this meeting.
1. Gyeonggi Province’s Global Leadership Shines, Strengthened Cooperation is Expected
The friendship between Gyeonggi Province and the State of Michigan has been growing since last year.
In April last year, a delegation from Gyeonggi Province visited Michigan to lay the groundwork for an innovation partnership and cooperative exchanges.
This March, the visit of the Michigan delegation to Korea and Gyeonggi Province reaffirmed this strong and special bond.
Especially through this meeting, the two regions were able to affirm the pride and limitless growth potential as centers of advanced industries in their respective nations.
Based on this, Gyeonggi and Michigan have expanded their innovation partnership into working groups* that are focusing on eco-friendly mobility, renewable energy, batteries, and biotech, thereby establishing substantive collaboration between the two regions.
(*Working groups: Practical groups comprised of Gyeonggi Province and Michigan State members focusing on future industries, youth, and climate as core agendas)
Through this meeting, there is heightened anticipation for the expansion of cooperation between Gyeonggi Province and the State of Michigan in driving future growth industries, including the Fourth Industrial Revolution Center, advanced mobility, climate crisis response, and youth exchange!
2. Promise Made in Davos with Michigan on “Fourth Industrial Revolution Center” Cooperation Also Sparks Excitement!
In January this year, Gyeonggi Province signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to jointly establish a Fourth Industrial Revolution Center in the province.
Gyeonggi plans for the center include a focus on areas such as climate crisis response, smart manufacturing, startups, and artificial intelligence (AI) technology innovation.
Coincidentally, Michigan State currently hosts the World Economic Forum's US Center for Advanced Manufacturing (USC4AM), which focuses on smart factories.
Considering the similarities between the two, the World Economic Forum Secretariat has proposed cooperation between the Fourth Industrial Revolution Center in Gyeonggi Province and the US Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Michigan, and plans are in place to foster such collaboration.
We look forward to a stronger innovation partnership between Gyeonggi Province and the State of Michigan!
