The Korea Ceramic Foundation is hosting the 2023 Permanent Exhibition Odyssey of Contemporary Ceramic Art at the Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art in Icheon City from November 24.
This exhibition, curated by the Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art, aims to showcase the evolution of contemporary ceramics from a conventional craft to a distinct genre of art, highlighting changes in public perception and the museum's identity regarding ceramics.
Featuring over 260 works from global masters, the exhibition is divided into three parts: ▲ Part 1: ‘Prelude to Modern Ceramics’, ▲ Part 2: ‘Material and Sculptural Language’ , ▲ Part 3: ‘Exploration in Contemporary Ceramics’.
▲ Part 1: ‘Prelude to Modern Ceramics’
Part 1, ‘Prelude to Modern Ceramics,’ explores the works of pioneering artists from Korea, the United States, and Japan, as well as other representative artists whose works formed the roots of contemporary ceramics. Displaying major works that have shaped Korean contemporary ceramics since the mid-1950s, the exhibition highlights the innovative artistic activities of masters who perceived 'ceramics' as 'clay' and ventured into new expressions in the art world.
▲ Part 2: ‘Material and Sculptural Language’
Part 2, ‘Material and Sculptural Language,’ allows visitors to appreciate works that explore the possibilities of ceramics from the perspective of spatial and structural elements, form and size, color, and texture. This section showcases the diverse trends of 21st-century contemporary ceramics.
▲ Part 3: ‘Exploration in Contemporary Ceramics’
Part 3, ‘Exploration in Contemporary Ceramics,’ presents sculptures expressing subjective thoughts, emotions, and narratives of artists after acquiring a free sculptural language. It introduces various expressions of contemporary ceramics in the 21st century through three themes: ‘New Forms and Pictorialism’; ‘Studies of Gi (Vessels, 器), Aesthetics’; and ‘Diversification of Contemporary Ceramics.’
Moreover, an interactive media wall allows detailed 2D and 3D examinations of exhibited items.
