The global fashion and textile
industries make the clothing each of us wears on a daily basis. They are world-spanning
multi-billion dollar industries that employ millions of people in the various
stages of production and distribution. South Korea has a unique fashion scene
of its own, and thanks to the popularity of Korean cultural products, South Korean
fashion is also gaining traction overseas.
Gyeonggi-do has long been active in
the fashion and textile industries, and the provincial government recently announced its intent to allocate KRW 241.1 billion by 2021 to further stimulate
the growth of these industries. This will have diverse positive impacts on the
local economy, creating 15,900 jobs, generating USD 3.2 billion in exports, and
more
K-Fashion and Gyeonggi-do’s Textile Industry Special Zone
With the growing popularity of
Korean fashion, K-fashion, the Gyeonggi Provincial Government plans to redouble
its efforts to foster the local textile industry over a five-year span.
The first comprehensive plan to
promote the textile and fashion industry was drawn up in 2012 and implemented through
to 2016. During that period, the province succeeded in developing the necessary
infrastructure to solidify the competitiveness of the local textile industry, including
G-Textopia (a textile support center), leather production industrial complexes,
and the Gyeonggi Fashion Creative Studio.

“Smart & Eco” is the vision guiding
the second phase of these strategies for the realization of high-functioning
fashion and textile industries that are eco-friendly. This includes plans for
the construction of a textile business center in Yangju City, a textile trade
and manufacturing research institute, and other key infrastructure.
The provincial government seeks to
attract international attention while fostering exports of high-quality
textiles produced in the province to countries such as Italy and the United
States. To help the local producers enter mid to high-end global markets, the
province plans to establish a warehouse/business space of approximately 500
square meters in Tuscany, Italy.
Concurrently, the government will
support small textile companies so as to improve their research bases, and will
also provide dyeing management systems to each industrial complex.
Targeting the new demands of the digital
age, Gyeonggi Province is working with the Korean German Research Center, which
is developing ‘Smart Textronics,’ a smart convergence technology that
encompasses next-generation textiles created to enable the integration of
digital devices into everyday fashion.
In addition, the provincial government
plans to designate a special textile/fashion industry zone in which textile
manufacturers in the cities of Yangju and Dongducheon can collaborate, and it
will contribute to the creation and promotion of the K-Design Village that is
being built in Pocheon.
