Made by spreading rice over a sheet of seaweed, layering it with various ingredients, and rolling it up tightly, gimbap began to gain widespread popularity in the 1950s and 1960s.
Then, with the advancement of meat processing technology in the 1980s, ham became a standard filling. Since the 1990s, dedicated gimbap restaurants have popped up everywhere, making a wide variety of gimbap a staple of daily life.

🍙 National Gimbap Cooking Contest
Under the theme "Gyeonggi Rice K-Food: The Future of Gimbap," this contest judges creative gimbap recipes using Gyeonggi rice and local agricultural products. Following a preliminary screening, a total of 30 teams (15 from the general division and 15 from the small business division) will compete in the live finals on June 13.
🍙 Gyeonggi Rice Gimbap Festa "Gimbap Family"
This is your chance to try all kinds of unique gimbap flavors! The marketplace features gimbap sales by local Gyeonggi shops and the contest's small business finalists. It also features the "Winners' Awards Zone" showcasing four past award-winning shops, alongside a "Gimbap Franchise Zone" with famous brands.
🍙 Gimbap Cooking Influencer: "Sook’s Kitchen" Gimbap Class
Join a cooking class hosted by Sook's Kitchen, widely recognized as one of Korea's top gimbap cooking influencers. She will also be sharing her own exclusive, delicious recipes during the session.

You can't have gimbap without tteokbokki! Don't miss this hands-on experience to make instant tteokbokki topped with special local ingredients from Gyeonggi Province. This event runs for one day only on June 14, so make sure to catch it!
