Every year, on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar, Chuseok is celebrated as one of Korea’s most important traditional holidays.

In Korea, Chuseok is a three-day holiday, including the day of Chuseok itself plus the day before and after.

So, what traditions make up Chuseok in Korea?

🍚 What We Eat During Chuseok

✔️ Songpyeon (송편): A half-moon–shaped rice cake filled with sesame seeds, beans, or red beans.

- The shape of Songpyeon resembles a half-moon, symbolizing the moon before it becomes full.

- It carries the meaning of “Though it is not full yet, it will continue to grow,” representing hope and prosperity.

✔️ Jeon (전): A variety of savory pancakes made by pan-frying meat, fish, or vegetables coated in flour and egg.

- These symbolize abundance and sincerity, and are also offered during Charye (ancestral rites) to express gratitude to ancestors.

👉🏻 In Gyeonggi Province, you can enjoy these festive dishes at places like Suwon Jidong Market, which has over 100 years of history, or Goyang Wondang Market, where tradition meets modern facilities!

🪁 Chuseok Traditions

✔️ Charye (차례): On Chuseok, families prepare a table with food from the autumn harvest to honor their ancestors, give thanks, and pray for prosperity.

✔️ Ganggangsullae (강강술래): A traditional circle dance performed under the full moon, where people hold hands, sing, and dance together—symbolizing unity and wishes for abundance.

👉🏻 At the Korean Folk Village in Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, you can experience these traditions firsthand! Along with folk games, you’ll also find seasonal festivals and cultural performances to enjoy 😎
