Are you looking for a unique travel destination in Korea? Then Gwangmyeong Cave should be at the top of your list. 🌌

Once an abandoned mine, this hidden underground world has been reborn as a cultural theme park and is now one of Gyeonggi Province’s most popular attractions.

Recognized as part of the ‘100 Must-Visit Tourists Spots of Korea’ by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization, Gwangmyeong Cave has earned a spot on the list five times in a row—alongside iconic destinations like Imjingak & the DMZ, The Garden of Morning Calm, Suwon’s Hwaseong Fortress, and Everland. This recognition cements its reputation as a top travel destination in the Seoul metropolitan area.

But Gwangmyeong Cave is more than just a tourist attraction. It is also a place that preserves an important part of Korea’s modern history.

Originally developed in 1912 during the Japanese occupation, the mine produced gold, silver, copper, and zinc, much of which was shipped to Japan. Inside the cave, you can still see writings left behind by miners longing for their hometowns, silent traces of their struggles and memories.

The cave maintains a cool temperature of 12–13°C year-round. After mining ceased, it was even used as a storage facility for fermented shrimp paste, taking advantage of its naturally stable climate.

In 2011, Gwangmyeong City purchased the site and transformed it into a fascinating cultural complex blending history, art, and entertainment. Today, visitors can explore highlights such as:

Cave Arts Hall: showcasing unique works by contemporary artists

Immersive Media Art: light and sound installations set against the darkness

Underground Aquarium: featuring freshwater species sustained by natural spring water

Modern History Hall: exhibits that recount the lives of miners, tools used in excavation, and stories of those who sought refuge here during the Korean War.

Practical tip: the cave includes stairs and inclines, so comfortable shoes and light clothing are recommended. 👟

Whether you visit in summer to escape the heat or in winter to enjoy its cozy, steady climate, Gwangmyeong Cave offers an unforgettable experience all year round. And with its close proximity to Seoul, it’s the ideal destination for a day trip.

If you’re looking for something extraordinary in Korea, don’t miss the chance to explore the mysterious underground world of Gwangmyeong Cave in Gyeonggi Province. 🙌
