On October 10, the global German company Merck officially opened a new semiconductor research center in Anseong City, Gyeonggi Province, marking an important milestone in the industry.
🌍 Merck Opens a New Research Center in Anseong City, Gyeonggi Province
The October 10 opening ceremony for Merck’s latest facility in Anseong City was attended by key figures in the semiconductor industry, including Gyeonggi Governor Dong-yeon Kim, representatives from Samsung and SK Hynix, and other key figures. Notably, Kai Beckmann, CEO of Merck Electronics, was present, highlighting the significance of this new research center.
✨ Merck’s Big Picture in Korea
Merck, a global powerhouse active in healthcare, life sciences, and electronics, has consistently demonstrated its commitment to Korea. Since 2002, Merck has invested over KRW 250 billion (about USD 190 million) in Gyeonggi Province, creating more than 900 jobs.
The new Spin-on Dielectrics (SoD) research center in Anseong City is the latest example of Merck’s dedication to advancing Korea's semiconductor industry. This state-of-the-art research facility is expected to play a crucial role in the growth of the industry in Korea and globally.
🤝 A Long-Standing Partnership with Gyeonggi Province
During the ceremony, Gyeonggi Governor Kim referred to Merck as an “old friend,” highlighting the strong partnership that has been built since 2002, when Merck first invested in the region. Over the past 22 years, this partnership has significantly contributed to Korea’s global competitiveness in the semiconductor and display industries.
Governor Kim expressed hope that Merck would continue to collaborate with Gyeonggi Province as it strives to build the world’s largest semiconductor cluster. He also emphasized the importance of Merck’s involvement in the new materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) complex, where the research center could serve as a catalyst for future cooperation.

Merck’s new SoD research center in Anseong City is a cutting-edge facility that took 27 months to build, with an investment of around KRW 12 billion (EUR 9 million). This center will focus on the research and development of Spin-on Dielectrics, a key component in semiconductor wiring processes and application testing.
In other words, this facility will be a hub for developing core semiconductor technologies, which are vital to the future of the industry. Given the crucial role semiconductors play in Korea’s economy, this research center is expected to accelerate technological advancements in the field.

Governor Dong-yeon Kim and Merck CEO Kai Beckmann first met at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where Governor Kim encouraged Merck to expand its R&D efforts and investments in Korea.
