Gyeonggi Province is allocating KRW 174 billion this year to launch the "Small Park Environmental Development Project" at 34 locations in 21 cities and counties, utilizing renewable energy and transforming these locations into eco-friendly parks for residents! 🌿

According to the province on the August 20, 2023, the "Small Park Environmental Development Project" is aimed at creating small parks in residential areas while incorporating renewable energy and eco-friendly materials. It contributes to addressing the climate crises by mitigating urban heat islands, alleviating heatwaves, enabling carbon absorption, and reducing fine dust. This initiative aligns with Gyeonggi Province Governor Dong Yeon Kim's "Gyeonggi RE100 Vision," declared in April, to promote the increased use of renewable energy in the public sector.

The province conducted assessments of demand among cities and counties until June for this project and recently completed suitability assessments for selected sites. Starting this month, the project will be launched in earnest.

The selected sites span 34 locations across 21 cities and counties, including the cities of Yongin, Siheung, Namyangju, and Pocheon, encompassing a total area of 349,200 square meters. The project will be entirely funded by the province (KRW 174 billion).

To promote Gyeonggi Province's RE100 Vision, renewable energy facilities accounting for over 20% of the project cost must be introduced. Additionally, green materials like eco-friendly clay and palm mats must be used.

Furthermore, for pedestrians with disabilities, the project will apply elements of accessibility by incorporating universal design principles in access roads, signage, and resting areas, creating a park environment that complies with barrier-free living certification.

Of particular note, to create parks that residents desire, the project will actively engage the public in the design phase and host community meetings during project implementation.

A Gyeonggi Province official stated, "The importance of parks and green spaces around residential areas has grown due to the increasing outdoor activities of residents," adding, "We will continue our efforts to provide Gyeonggi residents with better opportunities by enhancing convenience for residents and improving the urban landscape through the development of parks near residential areas, along with the expansion of Gyeonggi Province's eco-friendly infrastructure."
