Gyeonggi Province Governor Dong Yeon Kim met with David Eby, the Premier of British Columbia, Canada, to discuss collaboration between the two regions on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Canada and the 15th anniversary of the sisterhood between Gyeonggi Province and British Columbia.
Governor Kim met with Premier David Eby on the May 31 and stated, "There are many similarities between Gyeonggi Province and British Columbia, such as the development of advanced industries, a high multicultural ratio, and a commitment to climate change adaptation." He welcomed the signing of the '4th Action Plan,' which includes 'climate crisis response.' Among the local governments in Korea, Gyeonggi Province has the strongest commitment to climate change adaptation, and he expressed expectations for active cooperation. He stated, "Let's enhance collaboration in cutting-edge industries such as artificial intelligence and bio, taking this opportunity of your visit."
In response, Premier David Eby said, "British Columbia and Gyeonggi Province have achieved a lot together over the past 15 years through the sisterhood relationship. Through the signing of the action plan, which focuses on important priorities such as climate change adaptation, we have taken another step forward today." He added, "This action plan is a symbol of our long-standing friendship between the residents of British Columbia and Gyeonggi Province, as well as a promise."
This meeting took place as a part of the economic exchanges during Premier Eby's visit to Korea, in response to his request for a meeting with Governor Kim. Premier Eby expressed his willingness for personal and energy exchanges with Gyeonggi Province, with the presence of the Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation , the Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation, and the Minister of State for Trade also attending this visit.
Following the meeting, the signing ceremony for the 4th Action Plan was held. Since the sisterhood agreement between Gyeonggi Province and British Columbia was signed in 2008, Gyeonggi Province has been fostering exchanges through partnership events, participation in the Gyeonggi Boat Show and Play Expo, and dispatching Gyeonggi Province officials.
Through the 4th Action Plan, the two regions have agreed to promote exchanges in the fields of ▲economy and trade ▲culture and arts ▲sports ▲disaster safety ▲education and labor ▲climate crisis response.
The action plan includes Gyeonggi Province's emphasis on climate change adaptation, such as the 'Gyeonggi RE100,' and is expected to strengthen proactive climate crisis response and international cooperation through collaboration between the two regions in the rapidly changing international climate change landscape.
Meanwhile, British Columbia is a region that fought in the Korean War as a long-standing friendly country that fought for Korea's freedom and peace. It is the only sisterhood region of Gyeonggi Province within Canada.
