Gyeonggi Operates "Elementary School Dentist," a Free Dental Care Service
Gyeonggi Province is operating the "Elementary School Dentist Project," a free dental care service for 4th and 5th grade elementary school students, until November.
The Gyeonggi Elementary School Dentist Project encompasses a system that provides free dental health education and checkups to 4th and 5th graders and adolescents of the same ages in Gyeonggi Province.
The project covers 135,200 adolescents including those not currently attending school. It applies to all adolescents regardless of their parents' economic status.
Gyeonggi Province has been providing comprehensive dental health care services annually to 4th and 5th graders, who are in a period when permanent teeth formation takes place and applied dental care can be particularly effective in preventing a number of oral diseases.
Last year's project was carried out safely with measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
A total of 229,639 elementary school students in the 4th and 5th grades completed dental checkups with dentists, realizing a completion ratio of 88.4% relative to the total number of possible subjects, and a survey of students and guardians revealed a satisfaction ratio of 95.4%.

Eligible students should fill out a questionnaire through the "Dent-I-Gyeonggi" app and complete an online educational video before seeing a dentist.
They can then visit a designated dentist after making a reservation by phone.
The examination cost is subsidized by Gyeonggi Province and the respective city/county. In case treatment beyond the scope of project coverage is needed, the guardian will cover the expenses.
Participation procedures are as follows:
1. Download the "Dent-I-Gyeonggi" app to your phone.
2. After registering through the app, log in and enter relevant student information.
3. Agree to the project terms and use of personal information, then fill out the questionnaire and complete the online dental health care education (approximately 10 minutes).
4. Check the list of available dentists provided in the bottom right section.
5. Make a reservation via phone and visit the dentist
6. After receiving the dental examination results, receive customized dental health education and participate in a survey (via KakaoTalk).

According to a research survey on children's oral health conducted by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare, 56.4% of 22,000 12-year-old children experienced tooth decay.
This means that more than half of Korean children have experienced tooth decay. Since children's teeth are vulnerable to cavities, meticulous care is needed.
Through its dental project, Gyeonggi Province will provide proper dental care education and preventive treatments to elementary school children, thus laying the foundation for dental health.
Elementary school children in Gyeonggi Province are actively encouraged to use this free professional dental care service.
