Baekmi Port, Gyeonggi’s Ecological Recreation Area in Hwaseong City

Baekmi-ri Village, located in Seosin-myeon of Gyeonggi Province’s Hwaseong City,  is situated in a valley at the foot of a high mountain on the coast. The village offers a variety of fresh seafood, such as clams and octopuses, with flavors so diverse that the locality has been known as ‘Baekmi’ (“one hundred tastes”) since long ago.

The natural village roads here include Guri Island, Baelmi, Dangneomeo and more.

Guri Island is also referred to as Gul (“Oyster”) Island because it produces a large quantity of natural oysters; the Chinese also mined a considerable amount of copper here, so the place is called Guri (“copper”) Island. In addition, the name “Baekmi” can also be attributed to a geographical feature of the village that resembles a snake’s tail, while Dangneomeo derived its name from its location across from the southern mountain of Guri Island. This is a place where one can experience natural charms that are as diverse as the names. Recently, the area was completely transformed through the Fishing Village New Deal 300 Project. 

As Baekmi-ri Village has become famous for tidal flats and mudskipper fishing experiences, the number of visitors has increased. After the place was designated as a Fishing Village Experience Site in 2007, the number of experiential programs has rapidly increased. Gathering seashells, catching crabs, harvesting oysters, sea fishing, catching octopuses, riding kayaks, and various other activities are available here. Moreover, having been selected for the Fishing Village New Deal 300 Project, the locality has been revitalized as an ecological recreation area that offers an ideal environment for the creation of new memories by families, friends, and couples.

As a result, the newly remodeled B&B House now has accommodations on the 2nd floor and while the 1st floor features a Slow Food Experience Center where Korean foods and pastas incorporating Baekmi-ri’s regional products are sold. This is a place where people can enjoy diverse dishes made from seafood obtained during their various local experiences.The Fishing Village New Deal 300 Project is being propelled by the Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to modernize 300 fishing villages and ports in the nation while also improving their social overhead capital (SOC). The project also facilitates the discovery of regionally specialized businesses and the rekindling of regional spirit.

In the Baekmi Healing Yard, there are facilities for enjoying campfires – a centerpiece of camping – and auto-camping. There are also sunset camping sites where visitors can appreciate sunsets after taking part in salt pond and mud experiences.
