“Autonomous driving” is in the limelight as a life-changing technology.
The term itself refers to technology that enables vehicles to run on their own without human drivers.
One of Korea’s leading IT firms, Kakao, has announced that it will add an automated mobility service to KakaoT, its taxi reservation mobile application.
The Pangyo district of Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province was designated as a service area for Kakao Mobility’s autonomous driving in May 2021. Now, the area has been expanded to include all of Seongnam City and residents can reserve self-driving cars using the KakaoT mobile application.
Calling an autonomous car is simple; all you need to do is enter
your departure point and destination in the KakaoT mobile application.

The Pangyo district of Seongnam City has received favorable assessments for its automated mobility infrastructure in which a central control center, IoT services, and CCTV monitors enable the control of all routes in real time.
Gyeonggi Province is actively supporting automated mobility and has even developed Pangyo Techno Valley in conjunction with Pangyo Zero City, establishing a testbed that actualizes a futuristic urban setting where humans, ordinary vehicles, and automated vehicles coexist.

Self-driving vehicles receive traffic signal information every minute and have decelerating systems that are activated based on traffic analysis.
They operate safely with the control center providing real time information about traffic on major and minor roads as well as warnings about unexpected situations.
Emergency response measures, such as pedestrian care services, have also been set up.
Automated mobility technology is receiving so much attention because is it is an integral factor of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) in that various mobility services are offered through one platform.
We anticipate a much more comfortable life when the technology is further commercialized through Kakao Mobility’s kickoff and other IT companies’ participation. The technology is also expected to remedy accidents and crimes arising from negligent or reckless human driving.
With the autonomous-mobility-friendly Pangyo successfully operating, IT firms are now actively accumulating data.
It is exciting to see our lives become safer and more convenient through advanced technologies.
