There is a popular place visited by many in Yeoncheon County, Gyeonggi Province, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Imjingang River. It is none other than Horogoruseong Fortress! It is also known as sunflower paradise that marks the start of autumn every year. A serene image of sunflowers in autumn rain creates an even better scene!
Horogoruseong Fortress, where a view of a sunflower field unfolds, is a Goguryeo-era fortress located on the basalt cliff of the northern shore of the Imjingang River. Although not a large fortification, Horogoruseong Fortress has a circumference of 401 meters and is a triangular-shaped structure comprising a fortress that is 40 meters wide, 10 meters tall, and 90 meters long on the eastern side only.

Horogoruseong Fortress is one of three major Goguryeo-era fortresses constructed to defend against Baekje and Silla during the Three Kingdoms Period from the 5th to 7th centuries. The eastern wall is not only a place where you can see the outstanding fortification construction technology of Goguryeo, but also observe the ramparts of Silla. It is a vividly historical site where various relics such as earthenware and roof tiles of Goguryeo have been excavated. The first thing that that catches your eye when you arrive at Horogoruseong Fortress is the tomb of Gwanggaeto the Great. Through the North-South Korean Social and Cultural Cooperation Program, a South Korean team produced a model of the tombstone in North Korea and brought it to South Korea. It was then donated to Yeoncheon County in 2015.
Horogoruseong Fortress is located on the red columnar cliff along Gorangpo Port. It is also an observatory where you can enjoy beautiful views of Jangdanseokbyeok Cliff by the Imjingang River. While it is not possible to cross the Imjingang River without a boat as it runs deep from the West Sea to Horogoruseong Fortress, people have been known to use the low neck of the rapids in front of Horogoruseong Fortress to cross the river on dry days.
Horogoruseong Fortress open to the public and admission is free! A paradise of sunflowers, Horogoruseong Fortress is blessed with natural barriers for defense as well as natural flowers that fully bloom in autumn. It also features a famous photo spot called Stairs to the Sky!
