Expansion of New Concept ‘Gyeonggi Province DRT’ Bus Project
Gyeonggi Province announced plans to expand its new concept 'Gyeonggi Province DRT' bus project to other areas in the province. DRT, which has been piloted in Unjeong New Town of Paju City since December of last year, has drawn positive reviews and responses from users.
The 'Gyeonggi Province DRT’ project has been undertaken in fulfillment of a pledge made during local elections this year. ‘DRT’ stands for ‘Demand Responsive Transport,’ referring to a demand-responsive (or “call”) bus. This customized public transportation method offers convenience by increasing public transportation accessibility in new cities and other transportation deficient areas through the integrated concept of a taxi and bus.
The major difference from existing buses that operate according to fixed routes and timetables is that DRT buses use artificial intelligence (AI) to organize the transport of passengers via an optimal route in real time so as to meet passenger needs.
To use this bus, download the dedicated smart app (Shuckle App), enter the starting location and destination, and “call” the bus to be given real-time instructions regarding bus routes as well as departure and arrival points and times. Users just have to check the vehicle and seat number at the departure point and board the DRT bus at the expected departure time. If there are passengers traveling on similar routes at the same time, detour routes are automatically generated for ride sharing.

Korea's First System to Link DRT to Public Transportation Transfer Discount System
This is the first system in Korea to link the DRT and public transportation transfer discount systems so that passengers can enjoy the integrated transfer discounts of the Korean capital region when transferring to a subway or bus.
The new concept DRT bus project, which combines the concepts of a bus and taxi, offers convenience to residents who have difficulty accessing public transportation due to deficient transportation infrastructure.
In fact, the DRT systems in Unjeong Districts 1, 2, and 3 as well as the Gyoha District of Paju City, which have been under pilot operation since December last year, have been well received by more than 130,000 people so far. According to a related survey, 79% of respondents gave the DRT project a positive 'Satisfied' review, and 89% said 'I would like to recommend it,' citing that it was possible to get on and off near their location and that they could travel quickly via an optimal route.

At the same time, the '2022-2023 DRT Project Site Demand Survey' will be undertaken in the 31 cities and counties of the province. The province plans to expand the project by selecting areas suitable for DRT operation from among the cities/counties that express their intention to participate in this project through site screening.
