Let’s DMZ Begins its Second Journey from Gwacheon

A peace regime on the Korean Peninsula refers to a legal, systemic, and practical peace guaranteed by officially ending the war between South Korea, North Korea and other combatant nations. Since the armistice was established through the Korean Armistice Agreement of July 27, 1953, efforts to convert the armistice into a peace regime have been ongoing.

The plan focuses on creating a harmonious space of humanity and nature in a community of peace and ecology within the DMZ. The Let’s DMZ Peace Art Festival, a multifaceted festival of culture and art with the purpose of ‘Global DMZ promotion marketing and vitalization of tourism,’ has since been held .

In 2021, Gyeonggi Province established the Gyeonggi Province DMZ Region Development Plan for realizing peace on the Korean Peninsula and the peaceful utilization of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Subsequently, Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation will be hosting “Let’s DMZ – Gwacheon” at the Gwacheon Civic Center in Gwacheon City on July 23. This is the second performance following the first that was well received by residents at Yeoncheon County’s DMZ Peace Brick House on July 9.

“Let’s DMZ” is part of the DMZ Peace Art Festival of the 2022 Let’s DMZ program. It is a project through which performance groups visit various regions of Gyeonggi Province to raise public awareness of the value of the DMZ and peace on the Korean Peninsula.

At Let’s DMZ - Gwacheon, ‘Dots,’ a DMZ International Documentary Film Festival selection directed by Kkot-na-rae Bae, will be screened. This documentary film features stories of elderly Korean women past the age of 80 and living in the countryside who are attempting to overcome illiteracy.

Also, audiences can hear stories about war, division, and peace through the DMZ Picture Book Concert performances of ‘Meerkat’s Hat’ and ‘The Tiger Who Wanted to be King,’ which showcase a collaboration of storytellers and a jazz ensemble (club band) from Korea (Min-jeong Kim) and the US (Paul Matthews).

The performances will be held over a four-month period in cities and counties of Gyeonggi Province including Ansan, Guri, Icheon, Pyeongtaek, Dongducheon, Suwon, Yangju, Paju, Seongnam, and Uijeongbu until October. For more information on programs and locations, you can visit the official Let’s DMZ website (letsdmz.ggcf.kr) or the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation website (www.ggcf.kr).
