Gyeonggi Province Holds Photography Contest for Gwangneung Forest Biosphere Reserve
The Gwangneung Royal Tomb, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, was strictly managed as a royal forest of King Sejo, the seventh king of the Joseon Dynasty, and Queen Jeonghee. After the invasion of Korea in 1911, Gwangneung was incorporated into Grade-A Indispensable Forest Land for preservation and today is known as Gwangneung Forest.
Gwangneung Forest, an ecologically important and well-preserved forest that has remained intact for over 550 years, stands as an example of a temperate broadleaf forest that is rarely found in northern temperate regions around the world. In fact, Gwangneung Forest is home to a variety of flora ranging from young trees to aged trees. In addition, with the largest number of species per unit area in Korea – a total of 6,251 – Gwangneung Forest is a treasure trove of thriving biodiversity.
Based on these ecological characteristics, Gwangneung Forest was designated as a Biosphere Reserve in line with UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme on June 2, 2010, and the forest has since been recognized for its importance worldwide.
In order to promote the value Gwangneung Forest, where nature and people coexist, Gyeonggi Province will be holding the “1st Gwangneung Forest Biosphere Reserve Photography Contest."
The theme of this contest encompasses photos that convey the true value of Gwangneung Forest, such as the natural scenery of the “Gwangneung Forest Biosphere Reserve,” as well as ecological resources, history, culture, events, and tourist attractions. Any Korean citizen can participate in the contest without age restrictions.
The contest will run from August 1 to 31, 2022, and those who want to participate can apply through the official contest website and submit photo entries by email.
Gyeonggi Province plans to convene a screening committee of photography and landscape experts to select a total of 38 final photographs: 1 Grand Prize, 2 Excellence Awards, 5 Encouragement Awards, and 30 Selected Works.
The main contest criteria focus on how well the photographs convey the value of Gwangneung Forest, such as the coexistence of nature and people; this includes promotion usability, theme suitability, artistry, and expressiveness.
Photographs with the potential for high promotional value will be selected, and a total of KRW 6,500,000 in cash prizes will be awarded, including KRW 500,000 for the Grand Prize, KRW 300,000 for the Excellence Awards, and KRW 100,000 for the Selected Works. Those honored with an Encouragement Award or higher will also receive the Gyeonggi Province Governor's Award.
The award-winning photographs will be exhibited at the Gwangneung Forest Festival, which will be held in October 2022. The photographs will also be used in various materials to promote the Gwangneung Forest Biosphere Reserve.
Gyeonggi Province will continue its efforts to promote the value of Gwangneung Forest, which offer significant ecological value to not only Korea but also to the world.
